EMS Training and Education for EMT's and paramedics

Recently, St. Marys Area Ambulance Service Sponsored " THE ABC's OF SAFETY" class at Queen of the World School for Mrs. Robinson's Pre School Class. The presentation was conducted By Paramedic Thomas A. Tomaski and Paramedic Patty Hanes. Together they presented the "ABC's of Safety" to the 20 Children and explained all of the things that the children should be aware of and to be safe at home and outside.

In this presentation, Paramedic Tomaski and Hanes talked about strange and wild animals, wearing helmets, playing safely, walking and playing in pairs or groups, water safety, riding bicycles, avoiding strangers, keeping small items out of their mouths and their little brothers and sisters . Keeping away from firearms, knives and needles, staying off of frozen water, staying away from ponds, rivers, roads, walls and ledges. They explained how to call "911" for Ambulances, Fire or Police to come to their aid. Also the children were made aware of "Mr.Yuk" and what the sticker stands for with a very interesting song to remember of Mr. Yuk. The presentation rounded up with an exciting ride in the Ambulance around the block with the lights and sirens on to show the children what it was like.

The St. Marys Area Ambulance was filled with items for the children in Mrs. Robinson's Pre-School class such as helium balloons and gloves attached to a bag filled with ambulance, safety and fire prevention items that included coloring books, lights, stickers, safety brochures, pencil packs, finger paints, airplanes, pencils, EMS helmets and candy. Patty Hanes demonstrated the use of her stethoscope to listen to their lung sounds and heartbeat. Also Paramedic Hanes placed oxygen on some of the children to show that oxygen therapy is not painful but that is it very good for children when they are feeling sick. Hanes also presented that the St. Marys Area Ambulance personnel are very professional and compassionate in pediatric calls and treat the children as if they are their own. Emergency Medical Personnel are there to help any and all children if they are in need under any emergency circumstance.

Paramedic Thomas Tomaski placed EKG electrodes on one student to show the children what their heart beat looks like on the Life Pac 12 Cardiac Monitor. He also showed the children that the attaching of the EKG monitor electrodes is painless and that they not only use this monitor to observe the heart rate, but also their pulse toxicity and blood pressures.
